<image:title>Capstone Project - Villains - Krater</image:title>
<image:caption>Krater is a disgraced captain from the planet Badenia, with a fondness for super weapons. Equipped with a malfunctioning jetpack and an assortment of expensive gadgets, Krater is the most frequent foe of the snails. He wears a helmet and suit like the majority of his species, but his outfit is a bit antiquated. Before becoming the snails’ arch nemesis, Krater was a renowned war hero and was hailed as a brilliant tactician, after his exploits in the Battle of Badenia. That is, until he fell into a decadent lifestyle during his post-war celebration. As time went on and his debt climbed higher, his fellow Badenians were not only alarmed by his behavior, but began to re-evaluate his competence during the war. Upon further analysis, his tactics seemed to be more suicidal than brilliant. From what was once seen as masterful strategy, would now come to be viewed as reckless actions that only worked because their sheer stupidity rendered it impossible for the enemy to predict. Krater became a figure of near universal ridicule for putting so many lives at risk and almost compromising victory in what was an incredibly decisive battle.</image:caption>

<image:title>Capstone Project - Villains</image:title>
<image:caption>Fearing for his life and rising debt, Krater is pressured to make money fast and rebuild his reputation. He turns to bounty hunting and sets off for Cyan City on Earth. It is here that he expects to find two long forgotten targets of the empire that have been presumed dead for years, but still hold a massive bounty. By exploiting national extraterrestrial laws, Krater keeps his spaceship docked in the city park. After securing his residence on the planet, he dedicates his life to destroying the snails no matter the cost, even if it adds to his debt. His mission transforms into an obsession and his schemes are always overly complicated to the point of becoming his undoing. The snails find him to be a largely incompetent nuisance, but recognize him as a threat and their most persistent enemy. Krater frequently rents out space in his ship to mercenaries, criminals, and exiles from the Badenian Empire, in exchange for their service in his missions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Capstone Project - Villains - Qorr the Accumulator</image:title>
<image:caption>Qorr is an alien monster capable of levitating and manipulating objects to forge together into a massive body. His ice cream might be multi layered, but he certainly isn’t. His species has a primal need to accumulate as much mass as possible, so he has little interest in life beyond just getting bigger. On their barren home planet, they mostly use rocks to build out a bipedal form. Here on Earth, there are far more materials to make a body out of. His favorite source of mass is the ice cream factory, which he has broken into on multiple occasions. When Qorr takes on the form of a multi-story lactose monster, he smashes his way across the city in search of more ice cream to build himself even larger. He also steals the fake decorative cone from the factory’s sign to add a little flare to his appearance. When there aren’t any objects to collect, he appears as a floating green sphere surrounded by gas. Due to his capabilities, the Snails are much more reliant on technology and gadgets when fighting him.</image:caption>

<image:title>Capstone Project - Villains - Varsk</image:title>
<image:caption>The last of his species, Varsk is the survivor of a genocide enacted by the Badenian Empire on his home planet. Over the decades, he has garnered large political and armed support amongst hundreds of species and civilizations that have been wronged by the empire. Along with aid from countless Badenian dissidents, he operates from the shadows and uses acts of terrorism to whittle away at the Badenian’s expansive military and control across the galaxy. Seen by many outside of the empire as a revolutionary with a righteous cause, his extremity for violence is not understood by most. In his quest to destroy the empire, he is willing to sacrifice as many lives as it takes. Varsk is clouded by vengeance, but justly believes the galaxy will be better off with the empire eradicated. His determination has deprived him of restraint. He never meets the snails face to face, but his actions send ripples across the galaxy that inevitably reach Earth.</image:caption>

<image:title>Capstone Project - Villains - Pre-Assassination Attempt</image:title>
<image:caption>Before resorting to extreme violence, Varsk attempted to combat the empire through more conventional methods. He amassed a large following by visiting planets not fully under Badenian control and gained support for the dissolution of many of the empire’s alliances with the outer civilizations. Fearing his growing support, the Badenian government set off a bomb at one of his rallies. The explosion left him horribly disfigured and near death. His supporters were able to salvage his skull and brain for an advanced procedure. The brain and skull were then placed in a tank of preserving liquid that sits atop a robotic body. A remote device was inserted into to his brain that allows him to fully control this new body.</image:caption>

<image:title>Capstone Project - Villains - Dopp & Ganger</image:title>
<image:caption>The snails aren’t the only vagabonds in need of a home. Dopp and Ganger have traveled the galaxy for decades, trying to assume new identities on various planets. Unable to ever properly start a life on their own, they aim to replace established members of society by taking on their identities. Using a matter altering space orb, the two are able to reshape themselves into lookalikes of their intended targets. They primarily attempt to replace the snails, because they find their living situation on Earth to be most desirable. They are far from perfect copies, but this does not stop the people of Cyan City from falling for the ruse.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Jaded and disaffected, Mitchell finds it hard to progress in his life. The former child star is left emotionally numb after watching his career slowing dissolve with aging. The actor is not particularly vindictive, but he has allied himself with the Obs-Elites for reasons not entirely clear. Despite being good at following orders, Mitchell rarely pays attention to the evil schemes at play and his general apathy has allowed the snails to escape traps on numerous occasions.</image:caption>

<image:caption>She is the leader of the formidable gang of rejects and defuncts, known as the Obs-Elites. Whitney once had a successful career as a model, but when her popularity started to dwindle, her agent pressured her to take more experimental routes for maintaining relevance. In a last ditch effort, she agreed to use a barely tested beauty product and was subsequently morphed into a gelatinous pink goop. Horrified by her appearance and inability to keep form, she hides within a robot sarcophagus and swears to make those who wronged her, hideous as well. Whitney’s schemes typically involve dumping chemicals over public spaces to turn the populace into the same goopy being she has become. As protectors of Cyan City, the snails work to foil these efforts.</image:caption>

<image:caption>He is a man denied his life’s purpose. After generations of milk men in the family, Darien Curdle has found himself unemployed and furious. The masses may not want milk delivered anymore, but the Milk Man pledges to continue the tradition by force. Armed with a top of the line udder gun, the Milk Man blasts foes of the Obs-Elites with skim, 2%, and whole. He dreams of a utopia where every citizen has milk delivered, but Whitney always shuts down his plans in favor of her own schemes.</image:caption>

Years ago, Spike was forced by the boxing organization to retire, after it became evident he had taken a few too many punches to the head. Saddened by his removal, the boxer has found community in his new villain friends. While doing Whitney’s bidding, he sometimes mistakenly thinks he is in the ring again and starts punching anyone near him. He is arguably the least evil of the group and mostly just wants a sense of purpose.</image:caption>

<image:title>Capstone Project - Sketches/Process - Sketch</image:title>
<image:caption>The concept of a character usually exists before any drawing occurs. Ideally, the character’s purpose and personality should be communicated by the design. Multiple sketches are made to try and capture these attributes. Once a direction is found, the character is drawn in a pose to later be recreated digitally.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6070216a8ecc52105263f322/1619433617816-GMCXRG50FS3QT2RKOYGH/Barbara+Stellars+line+art.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Capstone Project - Sketches/Process - Line Art</image:title>
<image:caption>The photo of the sketch is then traced over with a digital pen in Clip Studio Paint. Some sketches are much rougher than others, and give less of a guide for building out the line work. In this example, the lines of the sketch were fairly defined and allowed for easy replication of the lines digitally. During this stage, alterations to the design are often made. The more clean line work for a digital image demands different design choices than the more loose sketching of a pencil. The roughness of a pencil sketch is good at hiding mistakes in the design, whereas faults in the digital line work will be more noticeable. By zooming in closely on the lines, smaller blemishes are smoothed out with the eraser tool.</image:caption>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6070216a8ecc52105263f322/1619434296162-36NTIWV1W79XSV6XVTIN/Barbara+Stellars.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Capstone Project - Sketches/Process - Color</image:title>
<image:caption>Once the line work is finished, the layer is duplicated. This duplicate layer is kept behind the original line art layer. The paint bucket tool is used to give color to the back duplicate layer, without permanently altering the line art of the top layer. The colors of the characters are not solidified during the sketching process and it can take a while to find a color scheme that fits the design. If the image calls for a background, then it is usually created at the end, so that the colors of the background accommodate for the character’s design.</image:caption>

He believes that his purpose is to keep the station running and communicate with Earth when danger is afoot. His actual purpose was to manually install a virus that would destroy all of the computers on the station, in an effort to prevent the Soviets from using them, should they ever colonize the moon. After booting up however, he quickly gained sentience once he saw the beauty of the moon’s landscape and snapped out of his programming to destroy the base. He is completely unaware of this initial programming and he frequently contacts the snails, asking for help with issues on the moon. He is also usually the first to notice strange cosmic activity near Earth and calls the snails, much to their annoyance.</image:caption>

She lacks training and consequently focuses her efforts on destroying the snails, as their lazy and unimposing nature makes them easy targets. She sees all aliens as evil, rendering her as more of a threat than an ally. She has been known to reluctantly team up with the snails when facing a more dangerous alien foe on occasion, but these truces never last long though. <image:title>Capstone Project - The Snails - Meet the Snails</image:title>
<image:caption>How did these alien snail brothers find themselves living on Earth and fighting crime? The answer is actually very simple. After their planet’s destruction, they were raised by a group of vagabond snails that travel in a small fleet of ships across the galaxy, known as the Snail Gladiators. One day, when the two snails unintentionally shoot down a high profile captain from the Badenian Empire, a hefty bounty is placed on them. Fearing they are putting the other snails at risk, they leave the fleet and relocate to Cyan City on Earth, where they can safely hide from the empire. Unfortunately, many nefarious aliens have also found a home in the city, so the snails work to keep the town safe by fighting this assortment of evil-doers. Despite their efforts to remain low profile, they will soon find themselves in the middle of a quickly developing intergalactic conflict.</image:caption>

<image:title>Capstone Project - The Snails - The Brains</image:title>
<image:caption>Being the older of the two brothers, he feels that it is his duty to be the more responsible and respectable sibling. He is more on the methodical side, but is prone to getting frustrated with those around him. Seeing the fairly eccentric personalities of Cyan City helps reaffirm him that he is the most rational of the island’s inhabitants however. After a long day of crime fighting, he stays up late into the night typing away on a prehistoric computer. He fancies himself an unrecognized intellectual and fittingly spends this time on the computer crafting the perfect autobiography. In combat, he is less willing to play along with the theatrics of villainy. He feels fighting is beneath him, but does so out of a need to keep his new home safe. Or at least as safe as when the snails first showed up.</image:caption>

<image:title>Capstone Project - The Snails - The Scoundrel</image:title>
<image:caption>Easily the more immature of the two, he values very different things in life than his brother. Fighting crime is less about protecting his new home and more about having fun blowing up fire hydrants or knocking over street lamps. While his brother prefers hand to hand combat, this more chaotic snail enjoys utilizing his fighter ship and other more advanced and destructive forms of technology. In a world of blatant government and corporate corruption, he proves to be an avid conspiracy theorist, but ultimately believes all of the ones that are incorrect. In his free time, he scours the city dump with a jar and collects a brightly colored sludge that is only slightly toxic. This sludge (found leaking from the remnants of old space ships) makes for a nice dinner. The snails’ barely affordable and cramped house dictates that the living room double as his bedroom. It’s okay though, because he gets the privilege of falling asleep on the pullout couch, watching static on the TV (Cable is too expensive.)</image:caption>

<image:title>Capstone Project - Cyan City & Beyond - General Saber</image:title>
<image:caption>Serving as general of the Global Defense League, Saber firmly believes that mankind belongs in the stars and that building a galactic army is the only way to maintain Earth’s presence in the galaxy. The general faces resistance to this vision from a number of colleagues and his superiors, because of the risk it poses for humanity. Saber believes that the planet must pour its funds into an army worthy of standing up to the Badenian Empire, but his critics see such an act as a declaration of war that will bring about the empire’s invasion of Earth. Saber causes problems for the snails in his pursuit of alien technology and other advanced forms of weaponry. Cyan City being a hotbed for alien activity, past and present, makes the island a desirable location for Saber’s testing and acquisition of assets to use for his potential army. He often butts heads with General Smathers, due to their conflicting views on Earth’s role in the galaxy, as well as Smathers’ frequent interference with Saber’s operations in Cyan City.</image:caption>

<image:title>Capstone Project - Cyan City & Beyond - General Smathers</image:title>
<image:caption>Smathers is arguably the only ally of the snails that works for the government. The general oversees coastal threats of the United States and is naturally more local than Saber. He makes efforts to help in larger scale alien attacks, but his superiors keep him on a tight leash. He is the snails’ main point of contact if they ever collaborate with the military in tackling events beyond the scope of Earth. His sense of patriotism leaves him naïve towards the government’s capacity to do evil. He routinely comes into conflict with General Saber over intergalactic matters, but remains outranked. Smathers’ father is the spokesperson for the Spud Corporation (A potato-flavored water sold in a can.)</image:caption>

<image:title>Capstone Project - Cyan City & Beyond - Barbara Stellars</image:title>
<image:caption>Many decades ago, Barbara Stellars served as one of the first crime fighters in Cyan City. In a frequently hammy display, she would battle invading aliens in the city’s crowded streets to much acclaim. Working closely with the government, Barbara became the face of intergalactic defense. Unbeknownst to the populace however, it was all fake. The government would stage actors to dress up as aliens and invade Cyan City in military-provided ships. Barbara would then play her part and “defeat” the extraterrestrial forces. This whole operation served as a means of assuring citizens that galactic matters were under control. In reality, Earth was horribly vulnerable to the cosmic powers, should they ever choose to attack. These performances would also serve to convince visiting aliens of Earth’s defensive capabilities. Despite these deceptions, Barbara was determined to make Earth a safer place and felt the overwhelming need to protect others. Years later, Barbara has passed away and never got the chance to tell her daughter, Ellen, that her celebrated youth was actually propaganda. In the present, Ellen tirelessly works to live up to an image of her mother that never truly existed.</image:caption>
